Bio-inspired Molecular Systems

Chaired by Jan van Hest and Luc Brunsveld

Within this research program we want to design, synthesize, and use life-like molecular systems to better understand, affect, and mimic biomolecular architectures found in the cellular environment. The final goals of this research program in the next ten years are hybrid cells and synthetic cells, which allow us to engineer specific cellular properties such as signalling platforms, cell sensors, diagnostic cells and artificial metabolic pathways. This program focuses on the following three topics, which address different aspects of this scientific challenge:

2a. Supramolecular chemistry inside the living cell
2b. Out-of-equilibrium processes in confined space, mimicking cells and cell organelles
2c. Biohybrid systems mimicking functional biomolecular assemblies
