On Saturday 10 December, Professor Ben Feringa received the Nobel Prize in Chemistry. The Award Ceremony was held at the Stockholm Concert Hall, Sweden. The video of the full ceremony can be found here.
The ceremony on Saturday was the culmination of a long and exciting journey that started about two months ago, on 5 October 2016, when The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences announced that Prof. Ben Feringa, together with his colleagues professors Sir J. Fraser Stoddart and Jean-Pierre Sauvage, were awarded with the Nobel Prize in Chemistry.

Nobel week
Ben Feringa shared the Nobel week in Sweden with family, friends and colleagues that join him for some of the events planned by The Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences. They also attended as public at The Award Ceremony. A blog with the highlights of the week was prepared by Peter van der Sijde and Riepko Buikema who followed the footsteps of the laureate and his official delegation in Stockholm on behalf of the University of Groningen. Also Ben’s colleague and friend Wesley Browne, one of the 14 official invitees at the ceremony, wrote a personal report of the Nobel week next to Ben at the Stratingh Institute for Chemistry newsletter.
Nobel lecture in Groningen
On 30 November professor Ben Feringa presented his Nobel lecture to his family, friends, students and colleagues in The Netherlands during a ceremony in his honour at the Martini Church. More than 1000 people joint the event that started with an opening speech by Prof. Elmer Sterken, Rector Magnificus of the University of Groningen, and was followed by Ben Feringa’s Nobel lecture. The ceremony ended with an interview by Martijn van Calmthout.
During the ceremony the major of Groningen, Peter den Oudsten, nominated Ben Feringa honorary citizen (Ereburger) of the city of Groningen. Next to it, the major also awarded the medal of honour (Erepenning) to Ben Feringa’s research group.
For the occasion, a giant nano car was placed on the Grote Markt in front of the Martini Church. The enlarged model of the nanocar that measures 4 by 6.5 metres is a tribute to Ben Feringa, and is the result of a collaborative effort between the city of Groningen and Marketing Groningen together with the University of Groningen. The final location of the nano car will be the Zernike Campus.
Lectures about the Nobel Prize in Chemistry by Ben’s colleagues
Since its announcement on 5 October, several FMS faculty members have given lectures about the 2016 Nobel Prize in Chemistry at different events. Presentations from friends and colleagues included overviews on nanomachines, youth pictures of Ben, personal stories, and many congratulations and best wishes dedicated to Ben.
