Dr. Gerard Roelfes, associate professor in the University of Groningen and member of the FMS, has been awarded a VICI grant of EUR 1.5 milion by The Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research (NWO). The VICI grants are individual grants awarded to ‘outstanding senior researchers who have successfully demonstrated the ability to develop their own innovative lines of research, and to act as coaches for young researchers’, as described in the NWO website.
Short description of Dr. Gerard Roelfes proposal (source: NWO), entitled Artificial enzymes:
‘The researchers will make new artificial metal enzymes and incorporate these into living cells. This will allow the researchers to expand the chemical repertoire of biological synthesis so that new molecules can be produced in a sustainable manner.’
